Description
The RB003 chilli is a modern superhot Capsicum chinense variety that has gained attention in the chilli-growing community for its extreme heat, unusual genetics, and dramatic appearance.
It is widely believed to have been bred by Australian grower Ross Barber, with most sources describing it as a cross between a Carolina Reaper (often yellow forms) and a 7 Pot Brainstrain type pepper.
Appearance
RB003 pods are very distinctive:
Twisted, heavily wrinkled “scorpion-like” shape
Often with a pronounced pointed tail (“stinger”)
Thick, bumpy skin with a rough, brain-like texture
Ripens from green to mustard/yellow or intermediate tones to deep red (sometimes other unstable colour variants appear)
Heat level
Estimated around 1,000,000 to 2,000,000+ Scoville Heat Units (SHU)
Typically described as Carolina Reaper-class heat or higher
No widely accepted lab-tested SHU value exists, so figures are based on grower reports and comparisons
In practical terms, it delivers:
Very fast onset burn
Strong full-mouth and throat heat
Long-lasting intensity, often lingering well after consumption
Flavour profile
Despite the extreme heat, RB003 is often noted for:
Fruity and citrus-like top notes
Light floral undertones
Mild earthiness (varies by grower and ripeness)
This makes it more interesting than many “pure heat” superhots, especially for hot sauces.
Plant characteristics
Vigorous Capsicum chinense growth habit
Medium-to-tall plants (often over 1 m in good conditions)
Productive but sometimes variable (not fully stabilised)
Prefers warm, sunny conditions and long growing seasons
Why growers like it
Extremely high heat level for chilli challenges and superhot collectors
Visually striking pods
Some phenotypes show unusual colour or shape variation (genetic instability adds interest)
Useful in ultra-hot sauces, powders, and ferments
In short: RB003 is a newer-generation superhot hybrid prized for Reaper-level heat, aggressive scorpion-like pods, and a surprisingly fruity flavour profile underneath the burn.
