During ripening, the pods go through a very unusual and ornamental colour journey, starting out deep purple or almost black, then shifting through wine red tones, and eventually developing pink, peach, and creamy pastel hues as they mature. This multicoloured transition is one of its defining traits and makes the plant as decorative as it is edible.
