Description

The heatless Moruga chilli is a novelty cultivar bred to mimic the dramatic appearance of the infamous superhot Moruga pepper, but without the intense capsaicin burn.

It typically produces  wrinkled, tapering pods with a twisted or “alien” shape, often ripening from green to deep red (sometimes orange or yellow depending on the line). Visually, it still looks like a high-end superhot chilli from the Capsicum chinense group, with that characteristic bumpy, uneven skin and sometimes a slight tail or stinger-like tip.

The key difference is in the heat profile: instead of the extreme heat associated with Moruga-type peppers, the heatless version is either completely mild or only very gently warm—often comparable to a sweet pepper or a very mild chilli with minimal pungency. This makes it popular for growers who want the dramatic superhot aesthetic without the risk of overpowering heat.

In terms of flavour, it tends to lean toward light peppery and slightly fruity notes, but without the intense floral or citrus “superhot” punch.

The texture is similar to other chinense-type pods: fairly thick-walled with a juicy interior when fully ripe.

Growers often value it as:

An ornamental plant with striking, exotic-looking pods

A “conversation piece” for chilli collections

A safer alternative for tasting or culinary experimentation where appearance matters more than heat

In short, the heatless Moruga is essentially a visual tribute to one of the world’s fieriest chilli lines, just without the fire.
