Description
The Bhutlah Red chilli is one of the modern “superhot” peppers, widely believed to come from a cross between the Bhutlah Red chilli line and other extreme Capsicum chinense genetics.
It sits firmly in the extreme heat category. Most estimates place it well above 1 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU), with some phenotypes pushing toward 1.5–2+ million SHU, putting it in the same league as Bhut Jolokia, 7 Pot, and Carolina Reaper and adjacent cultivars.
Visually, the pods are typically:
Deep wrinkled red when fully ripe
Often gnarled or “bumpy” in texture
Medium-sized but dense and heavy for their length
Sometimes with a slight “pitted” or rough surface typical of superhots
In terms of flavour (before the heat takes over), Bhutlah Red tends to have:
A fruity, slightly berry-like sweetness
Subtle earthy and floral notes
A slow-building burn that escalates dramatically and lingers for a long time
The heat profile is not instant like a Thai chilli; instead it often:
Starts deceptively manageable
Builds rapidly across the mouth and throat
Peaks in an intense, sustained burn that can last 20–40 minutes or more
Because of its intensity, it’s mostly used in:
Extreme hot sauces
Small-batch chilli extracts or powders
Competitive chilli challenges (with caution)
It’s not a casual cooking chilli. tiny amounts go a very long way, and handling it usually requires gloves to avoid skin irritation.
