Description

The Fox Ruby Ghost chilli (often seen in seed catalogues as variations like Fox Purple Ghost Gnarly Ruby) is a modern superhot hybrid chilli in the Capsicum chinense family, bred more for its striking appearance and extreme heat than for everyday cooking use.

It sits in the same general “ghost pepper lineage” as the original Bhut Jolokia (ghost pepper), but it’s typically a Fox Peppers ornamental-style hybrid with added colour and shape traits.

Appearance

Pods are usually elongated, heavily wrinkled and “gnarly” textured

Often start deep purple or almost black when unripe

Ripen through purple, burgundy, and ruby red/orange tones

Frequently have a pointed tail or stinger-like tip

Plants themselves can show dark/purple-tinged foliage and stems

Heat level

Extremely hot: typically around 1.2 to 1.5 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU)

Comparable to other superhots like ghost pepper derivatives and Naga types

Heat is intense and lingering, often building after a delay

Flavour profile

Despite the brutality of the heat, it’s not just fire:

Fruity and slightly sweet undertones

Mild earthy or floral notes

Like most superhots, flavour is secondary to heat unless used carefully

Plant traits

Medium to tall bush (often 1–2 metres under good conditions)High yielding when healthy

Strong ornamental appeal due to dark foliage + multi colour pods

In simple terms

Think of it as a ghost pepper–level chilli that’s been selectively bred for dramatic colours and “monster” texture, making it popular with collectors and growers rather than casual cooks.
