Description
The variegated Bleeding Shishito chilli (often seen in ornamental pepper collections) is a striking decorative form of a Capsicum annuum type that blends unusual foliage with highly variable fruit colouration.
The plant itself is typically the main attraction: instead of plain green leaves, it shows cream, pale green, and sometimes pink-tinged variegation, giving it a mottled, almost painted appearance. New growth can emerge with stronger pink or purple flushes, especially in good light, which is where the “bleeding” part of the name comes from.
The peppers are usually small, elongated pods similar in shape to shishito-style chillies, but with far more dramatic colouring. Early fruit often start deep purple or almost black, then “bleed” into green, red, or orange streaking as they mature, sometimes showing multiple colours on a single pod. This creates a marbled or gradient effect that looks more ornamental than culinary.
In terms of heat, it’s generally mild to low-medium, often comparable to decorative shishito or cayenne-type ornamentals, though individual plants can vary. Some pods may be almost sweet, while others have a gentle warmth.
Overall, it’s grown more for its visual impact of variegated foliage plus multi-coloured peppers more than for cooking, making it popular in patio pots, ornamental beds, and chilli collections where appearance matters as much as flavour.
