Description

The Goat Brain chilli is a rare, exotic-looking superhot chilli cultivar prized mainly among chilli collectors rather than mainstream growers. Like many modern “designer superhots,” its exact lineage isn’t widely standardised, but it’s generally grouped with Capsicum chinense types (the same species family as ghost peppers and reapers).

The pods are usually the standout feature. They tend to be heavily wrinkled and lobed, often with a distorted, “brain-like” surface texture that gives the chilli its name. Mature colours are typically deep red, though some strains may show peach or orange variants depending on breeding selection. The shape can vary quite a bit, but they’re usually small to medium pods with a dense, bumpy appearance.

In terms of heat, Goat Brain chillies sit in the superhot range, often estimated well above 500,000 SHU and potentially reaching over 1,000,000 SHU in well-developed pods. The heat tends to build quickly and can feel sharp and persistent, though flavour profiles vary some selections lean fruity and floral before the burn, while others are more earthy and straightforward like many chinense types.

The plant itself is typically productive and visually striking, with heavy pod set that emphasises its ornamental appeal as much as culinary use. It’s mostly grown by chilli enthusiasts for novelty, breeding projects, or extreme heat challenges rather than everyday cooking.
