Developed by American breeder\u00a0<a title=\"Ed Currie\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ed_Currie\">Ed Currie<\/a>, the pepper is red and gnarled, with a bumpy texture and small pointed tail. The Carolina Reaper was certified as the world&#8217;s hottest chilli pepper by <i>Guinness World Records<\/i> on August 11, 2017.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-GWR_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Testing was conducted by\u00a0<a title=\"Winthrop University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winthrop_University\">Winthrop University<\/a>\u00a0in South Carolina during the certification process which showed an average heat level of 1,641,183\u00a0<a title=\"Scoville scale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scoville_scale\">SHU<\/a>\u00a0for a given batch.<sup id=\"cite_ref-GWR_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-latimes_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Previously the record for the hottest pepper had been held by the\u00a0<a title=\"Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trinidad_Scorpion_Butch_T_pepper\">scorpion pepper<\/a> which measured in at 1,463,700 SHU in comparison.
